End of Semester Reflection

It is crazy that 2009-2010 school year is at an end. I have learned so much in the classes I have taken. I feel truly blessed for the wisdom I have gained from peers, and teachers. I have learned so much in this class also. I learned how to comfortably manquere around on the Smart Board. My cooperating teacher has a Smart Board in her classroom, I will definitely use it! I also have really enjoyed learning about all the free tools/ resources online. I have also utilized the site Diigo to do my social bookmarking for this class along with my visual art/ and math method classes. I will continue to use the knowledge to learn more about the latest technology that is available. I will try to update my blog periodically to let fellow peers see what is happening in the class room I student teach in.
For my Nets for teachers I focused on
1) Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity
During the course, I tried to use the Smart Board or other form of technology in my other classes. I tried to use it in a way that would impact students and spark interest in subject matter. In my final project for example, I used Youtube, Smart Board, google images, and google maps to present my lesson. I tried to show students how/ what screen printing was through the artist Andy Warhol. I used his pictures to show how one could be created. I also showed a video that showed "how to make" screen prints on t-shirts.
5) I also focused on Engage in Professional Growth and Leadership-
Throughout this semester, I tried to be more outgoing in my classes. I tend to observe instead of actively participate, and this semester I tried to help lead discussions. I found that I have gotten much more out of classes that I try to participate in on a regular basis. Both NET goals will be something I will be continually striving for as I student teach and soon after become a teacher.

Reflection 12

What?
Two years ago I recieve an Acer laptop for christmas. Upon recieving it, I plugged it in, and made sure it was fully charged before using it. After just two short weeks of having it, I noticed several glitches. The battery was supposed to last for two hours but only lasted for half an hour. It constantly "dumped" physical memory, and it also had trouble gaining connectivity with free wifi locations.
So what?
After two years of trying to be patient, my motherboard completely fried. Fortunately, the person that was working on my computer knew someone that was recycling their semi-used Gateway computer, therefore I got a new one for free! Having the Gateway for over three months has been a lifesaver. I no longer worry whether something I have saved will be their in the morning. I also have the latest Windows 9 which has made operations on my computer much simpler.
Now What?
Between the two computers, I have seen substantial differences. I feel completely blessed that I have a functional computer that has amazing speakers. I am never, ever going back to ACERs.

Reflection 11

What?
I recently met with my cooperating teacher. If everything goes right, I will be teaching in the Bellevue district at Enatai grade school in a second grade classroom. I am so excited to finally use the tools that I have been taught in an actual classroom setting.
So What?
Why am I talking about this? Well, I noticed that my cooperating teacher had a Smart Board. She told me that she hasn't used it often, therefore I am excited to be able to teach her what I have been taught through this class. I hope that through teaching her what I know, she will use the great tool.
Now what?
I am super excited to start in the classroom. I have heard that the group I will be working with is behaviorally challenging. Hopefully with the use of technology and the classroom management students will be less inclined to act up. I hope that this next year exceeds my expectations and pushes me to grow in ways that I didn't think possible!

Reflection 10

What?

I thought it would be fun to talk about online courses. The benefits and the draw backs. Recently, there has been an upward climb of courses offered online. I have recently found that some elementary school have gone strictly online. While at times I feel that would be handy, I don't think that should be implemented especially in the younger grades.

So What?
Why am I bringing this up? Well, as a society, we have become somewhat reliant on the latest technology. Although technology has brought many much needed conveniences, it also hinders are interpersonal experiences. Often times people use Facebook, texting and IM and forgo face-to-face communication. If we start redefining school as simply a program that teaches and leave out any type of verbal communication, I wonder how our society would be. I do, however, feel that there are benefits to online school programs. For students that have parents in the military or parents that move often, its a great way for them to stay within the "class" year round. I think teachers would start to see students that moved constantly having less "gaps" in their education.
Now What?
Although I think there are benefits to online education, I don't think that is should substitute classroom education. In the classroom we learn more then just the basic facts, we learn about how to interact with others. If students at a young age aren't given that opportunity I just wonder how they will be when they have a job that forces them to interact with others on a daily basis.

Reflection 9

What?

Lately in my classes I have used the Smart Board in almost all of my presentations. I have grown accustomed to it because I have the software on my computer. Often times when I create a lesson plan I try to in some way utilize it.

So what?

Why am I talking about this? Well, I feel that the Smart Board is a great tool. I have enjoyed having my entire lesson at my finger tips. The only issue I find in the Smart Board usage is the opportunity a teacher can have to "coast." With the software comes several different full lesson plans. They are great, and very thorough. Unfortunately, I could see someone easily substituting this tool as the main focus of a lesson.
Now what?
With this new technology, I feel that we need to make sure that we implement it in the classroom, but we don't use it as a substitution for teaching.

Reflection 8

What?
One of the newest glizmos Apple had come out with is the IPad. The IPad is a handheld device that is great for taking notes, surfing the internet, and watching movies in HD.
So What?
Why have I mentioned this? Well, last week in class, one of the professors brought in his very own IPad. I was blown away by the quality of the images. I was impressed by how quickly it maneuvered through the Internet without a glitch. After handling the mechanism, I immediately wanted one. I thought of all the things it would be useful for, then I looked at the price tag-yikes! I'm a college student, and not one that is a big fan of $500-$1,000 dollar purchases.
After driving home from class, I read this article which shocked me, read.
Now what?
After reading the article, I realized how dangerous it can be having the latest gizmo. I often wonder if the impulsitivity of our society stems from the fast paced life we have created from all the technology we have at our fingertips? I am in no way stating that technology is not important or valuable. I am simply stating that we need to be careful in what we invest our money in, because others might want it just as badly, and be willing to do whatever it takes to get it.

Assignment #4 (technology project)

For my technology project, I decided to use a lesson plan I did for my art class. I completely reworked it, attempting to use at many site and tools as possible. For my art lesson, I had talked about Andy Warhol and his method of screen printing. I talked about how he was the "prince of pop art." I used several features to make my Smart Board feature entertaining.
Features:
DropBox: I used it to store my presentation online
Diigo: I used this to compile the majority of my resources. Its a great bookmarking tool
Google maps: Used this site to show students where our field trip will be, I also showed them all the surrounding screen printing shops
Youtube: I used this site as a visual representation on "how to" do a screen printing on a t-shirt
Smart Board: Used this to show the lesson plan.
Google images: I took several pictures from this site to show the difference between real pictures of different images, and Andy Warhol's interpretation of art (pop art)
Text box: Throughout the lesson, I used text boxes to indicate to students what they were visually experiencing.
I had two central issues when designing this project. The first issue was dealing with was my Diigo account. At the beginning of the set up I had no issues adding (bookmarking) items that I wanted. Recently when attempting to add sites onto my page, I was having difficulties, for some reason it wouldn't allow me the opportunity to add more sites. After working with the site for approx an hour, I finally got it to bookmark correctly. The second issue I dealt with was through the drop box site. I downloaded the program, but it wasn't working properly. Next, I downloaded it a second time and it actually worked. Overall, this project was fairly painless, just time consuming. I think the most difficult part was figuring out which tools I should incorporate within my project.
The Net standards for teachers I fulfilled:
1) Facilitate and Inspire student learning and creativity:
During this lesson, students not only learn about a central figure in the pop world, they will also learn how to create their very own pop art using a photograph as well as go to a screen printing facility and make their own t-shirt. This lesson is very creative in the sense that no two projects will be the same, students will be encouraged to think outside the box.
a) Promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness:
I will be modeling my very own piece of art during the lesson, so students get to see a visual of my expectations. It will also be a guide as to how the art will turn out.
3) Model Digital-Age work and learning
By showing the Youtube clip, students will get to see first hand how to make a screen print. This type of teaching is of a more digital nature in the sense that they are learning outside of the traditional teacher-lecture setting.
5) a. Participate in local and global learning communities to explore creative applications of technology to improve student learning
Again, using the Youtube site, as well as my Diigo account students get the opportunity to learn about the world around them. Students get to participate in a community of outside learners and learn something they most likely have never known about.
Nets for Students:
1) Creativity and Innovation:.
This lesson requires students to not only learn about an art technique, an artist, and vocabulary terms, it also teaches students to be creative. They are required to think outside of the box to create their photo-silk screen, and their t-shirt screen print
2)Communication and Collaboration:
During the process of the lesson, students will have to do a fair amount of collaborative learning. They will be asked to work in groups to share the art material. They will also be asked to come up with their own screen print business after they have designed their work of art. The business they create will also be with their peers. Students will be asked to work in groups of four to make their business.
Project:
This project was so fun to create. I know that I will use it in whatever level class I teach in the future. Its great because it's not only interactive, but its also a very visual and hands on for students that learn in that way. I will use the project in its entirety depending on if we have the opportunity to take an actual field trip or not.

Reflection 7

What?

Its been an interesting experience at Northwest University. I like how each teacher has a different teaching style. Some lend themselves to a more modern style of teaching by implementing technology into the classroom. Many try to use the Smart Board (if it is available to them). I also have had teachers that provide a more traditional approach by teaching straight lecture with the occasional powerpoint.

So What?

Why would I mention this? Well, I find it interesting that each class produces quality education. How can that be? I find that education isn't so much about the tools used, its more about the delivery and how well a teacher comprehends and understands the material they teach.

Now what?

For a time I thought, "what am a going to do if I don't have the technology in the classroom that I teach in?" After thinking about the different classes I have had, I came to the solid conclusion that whatever the envorinment I am given, I will be content. I know that I have been well equipped with the knowledge I need to be able to teach the students. Although technology is great for visual learners, it isn't the essential element that make or break a teacher.

Assignment 14

I read the article entitled, "Open Mind" by Kate Hafner. The article talked about how technology and education have changed the type of students teachers have. The article focused more on Yale University and how classes are now available to the public. Many independent learners have excelled and gained insight into an ivy league school that they would have never had the means to be given the opportunity to go . Bill Gates has even listened to a class or two and gained insight into subject matter, which he felt was a helpful tool. So helpful in fact, he donated 8 million towards the cause. The article also borrows itself to the argument whether those barriers should be broken. Some feel that because they have put forth the effort in the classes, they deserve the credit (grade), while others strongly disagree. I feel that the information that is taught within the classroom are valuable tools that can benefit many people for years to come and it's pointless to waste taped lectures on students that are unwilling to go to class, I think that by sharing the information it helps expand peoples minds that might have the ability and the drive to do the course work but lack the means to do so.

Assignment 13

For class we are required to make an entry that includes the features of excel, powerpoint, and word.
Word- is a great resource that has several features on it to not only allow students to write papers, but it also has features that allows someone to edit the paper using word ballons, hightlighters, and sticky notes that allow the editor to offer feedback
Excel-I don't use office excel as much as word or powerpoint. When I took accounting class however, I became very familuar with it. It offers conditional formatting, has different cell sizes, and allows the opportunity to create one's own table
Powerpoint-Is a pretty handy program to have. I used it a considerable amount this year when I gave math presentations. It's a program that essentially allows one the opportunity to create "slides" that move based on the operators choice. The program has an option where you can have each slide the same formatting/ same background. It also has the option of putting links to websites, sound (from one's Itunes library), and many other awesome easy to use features.
Three different projects:
Word: As a class assignment, you could have students review a paper by using the editing tools. That way not only will they be getting familiar with the system, they will also learn how to edit more proficiently.
Excel: As a class assignment, you could have students graph information that they receive through a math problem. They could create their own table, or use the pre made table that is available
PowerPoint-As a class assignment you could have students create their own PowerPoint, with their own background and music. You could give them a theme such as "underwater creatures" or "different habitats."

Assignment 12

For the online learning I decided to check out K12 online conference more specially Professor Stephen Heppell's message, "It simply isn't the 20th century any more is it? So why would we teach as though it was?" The speaker talked about how technology has changed society in a big way. He talked about the idea "me, we, and see." He talked about how with the us of technology we were able to create a sense of "us" which connects us to a global community. He talked about different programs that helped students learn about the world around them. He talked about how a community of students were given the task to interview people (in England) about their childhood. Many students in his program ( in the eighties) were able to interview famous people ei: Elizabeth Hurley, and then they made a webpage that talked about what they learned from the experience. The presentation was a 40 min session that was informative.

Assignment 10

I read the article "Hulu-Making TV Better for the classroom?" The article talked about how Hulu can be a great site to use in the classroom. After reading the helpful article, I realized I was the only one that posted anything. I hope that people that read the author's blog will contribute to it, by posting feedback also.

Part one of Assignment #4

To make a pocast with my ideas for a lesson, I used Vocaroo. Vocaroo is a very easy site to operate and self explaintory. For my lesson plan, I thought it would be fun to do a geography lesson with a third or fourth grade class. I felt that using Google Earth would be a fun site to show students how different places around the world look.
My podcast is about a minute long.

post 10

Today for my technology in education class we are having vistors. The NU educators panel will be talking to our class about technology in the classroom as well as education insight and information.
Three questions that I want to ask them include:
1) Do you like using technology in your classroom?
2) Do you find it more helpful or is it more of a hinderance?
3) What is your favorite part about being a teacher?

Assignment #3 Resources for Teachers

Introduction
I decided to use the tool, Diigo. My toolbox: sarah womack. I compiled my toolbox by getting sites mainly related to third grade lesson plans. I also got sites that would be useful in the classroom. One site is designed specifically for classroom bulletin boards. I also tagged two sites that deal with media including teachertube, and youtube. The program that I used was extremely helpful because one joins, they can simply upload a toolbar that the top of their Internet page and any site they so desire can be bookmarked. The site provides a place for one to also give a description of each site. I found that to be very helpful. It also has other tools including the ability to put "sticky notes" or highlight sections of the website that are useful.
Sharing
I felt there are many ways I could share these sites with others. By having my own teacher blog, I could invite fellow employees to look at the sites I have bookmarked. I could also put my URL on any newsletter I would give to parents. It would be a great tool for parents to check out the sites recommended. I will definitely use my toolbox. Its nice to have useful sites tagged. It will help me find lessons, and media quickly instead of having to research online. The toolbar is organized from the most recently added sites. I don't have them in alphabetical order because I gave a small description of each site, therefore it's not necessary.
There were three sites that I am especially excited to share with you.
The first site is Teacher Tube. Teacher Tube is a great site for a variety of reasons. It is similar to You Tube from the stance that homemade videos can be viewed on the site. The major difference is that the videos are filtered, making in child proof. It not only offers tutorials, it also offers several educational songs and videos. It also has tabs dealing with blogs and other audio tools. It would be a great tool to use in the classroom because it has videos pertaining to every subject taught in the classroom. It would be neat to incorporate a video from the site in a lesson plan, to give students more of a visual experience.
The second site I really enjoyed was Classroom Architect. This site is great for teachers. For my instructional design class, we are required to diagram our "classroom." This site provides the opportunity to make several templates pertaining to one's classroom. It is a great tools when deciding how make a lesson plan work in the classroom layout. It also helps a teacher have greater classroom management if they are able to easily map out their classroom.
The third site that I really enjoyed was the History Channel. The history channel is great because it provides videos, games, and is organized by topics. I felt this site would be very useful to use in the classroom when talking about history. I looked at several different videos and was extremely impressed with the quality of images and information discussed. I watched the origins of Easter which was very fascinating. I felt that it could be used in the classroom when discussing multicultural elements of history.

Assignment 9

I read the blog, "Caught on Video." I was very intrigued by the author's ideas in using a video camera in the classroom. I felt he did a great job of exploring several fun and practical ways of using a camera in the classroom. Using the video camera to record the main topics covered in each class lesson would be great for students. It would be nice for the teacher to use a blog or something to post the videos. For students and parents to have access to video of the classroom activities and assignments at the same time would make things more convenient for parents that have busy work schedules. I thought it was a great idea to have students be recorded at the beginning and at the end of the school year to see their progression throughout the year. I also liked the idea of having parent/teacher conferences video taped. That way, parents can re watch it, if they have any additional questions, it can be addressed at a later time. The only difficulty with utilizing the camera as much as he suggests is that it would be a lot of editing. In order to re watch the footage, the teacher would have to label each individual clip. Would each clip be organized under each student file? Overall, I feel that it should be utilized. Students that are sick or need additional help would profit the most from this form of technology.

Assignment 8

Throughout the coarse of this class (technology in education), we have used the smart board. The smart board is a great tool and provides students with an interactive way of learning with the use of technology. The smart board is not the only classroom device that has benefits. The Activ Board is another tool some schools use.
I read an article entitled, "Promethean ActiveBoard Review," that discuss the postive and negative aspects of the interactive whiteboard. The author talked about how there are several postive aspects to the whiteboard. The Activ Pen is easy to set up and calibrate. Its also solid and durable so students are able to touch the screen without fear of damage. It also is a great tool because there are 1,000 of premade lesson plans that come with the kit.
There are only two negative aspects to owning the whiteboard. It can be expensive to for the buyer. Not only in the intial purchase, but also mainting the product. It also isn't touch sensitive like the Smart Board. Students are required to use the Activ pen to be able to write on the board.
Based on the article I read, I still feel that the Smart board is a better purchase for schools. The only major difference I have noticed in the size modification that can happen with the activ board. The Smart Board is touch sensitive which is a very useful element that I have appreciated since I have started learning how to use it.

Reflection 6

What?
I read an article entitled, "Technology: A catalyst for teaching and learning in the classroom." The article seemed to take a negative approach to technology in education. The authors were willing to acknowledge the fact that computers are used on a daily basis, but fail to help students in the classroom. At one point in the article, the author stated "We are living in the age of information overload with the expectation that students will learn high-level skills such as assess, evaluate, analyze, and synthesize vast quantities of information. At the same time teachers are evaluated by their ability to have students pass test that often times that often don't give value to these abilities." I found that quote to be quite powerful, has technology created a disadvantage for students? Or, does the classroom need to reform?
So What?
Why is there such a controversy with the use of technology? Is it because seasoned teachers don't feel comfortable? Or, is it to the disadvantage of the students to be submerged in this culture of over indulgence?
Now What?
I think that there are several improvements that need to be made. I think elementary and secondary classroom should have some type of technology implemented in their program . I don't think that technology (in moderation) is bad for a student. No, quite the contrary actually. At almost any job one is to obtain in the U.S. will use technology in some form or another. Students need to be exposed to it early, therefore it become second nature to operate.

Reflection 5

What?
A couple of years ago I went to a friend's birthday party. While there, many of the people seemed uncomfortable. Some decided to fixate their eyes on the TV screen, while others pulled out their cells phones. After about ten minutes of silence, people started pulling out their computers. Through the use of their computers, some of the people starting skyping! I was shocked and appalled by the lack of consideration paid to those that actually wanted face-to-face interaction.
So what?
Why am I bringing this story up? Well, as a society, I feel that we have replaced the most crucial form of communication to a less sophisticated manner of communication. Some would disagree. I feel we have relied so heavily on computers and technology that we have neglected social responsibility. Often times, family and friends suffer the most. Wait, that doesn't make sense! Those are the people I am in constant communication with, how can it be crippling those relationships? I can almost guarantee for every Facebook, Myspace, text, or twitter one has responded to, there is a person that is being neglected that is in the same room or in close proximity. I can recall several occasions where I am at my house, texting, while my one of my family members is close by.
Now what?
I think as a society, we need to clue into the people around us. Instead of texting a friend that we will be seeing in five minutes, get to know the people in the same room as you. People are lonely and need to be reached out to. Why else would we be addicted to Facebook?

Reflection 4

What?
I went home three weeks ago my brother showed me a new animation he had created with his HD program on his desktop. I was shocked at the clarity and the skill it took to create the 10 minute short. After I watched it two times, I decided to have him show me how he created it. I was blown away by the amount of patience and knowledge it took. I would have struggled creating a minute presentation of that caliber.
So What?
Even though I starting learning about computers when I was in fourth grade, I still feel like a digital immigrant. Looking at my household ranging from ages 50-14 there is a significant generational gap that has occurred. My dad and mom struggle with learning new programs and operating the computer, while my kid brother is a computer whiz. I tend to fall in between the two, I am not a native but I am (by no means) a digital immigrant.
Now What?
Seeing the major gap between those that were raised in a technologically savvy world and those that haven't has cause me to ponder what the next generation will be like? Will students be learning their ABC's on the computer? Will all standardized testing be via computer? I wonder if students will have to turn in "hard copies" of their homework in upcoming years. Who knows what the classroom will look like in ten years time, or five years for that matter?!

Reflection 3

What?
When I was in third grade my parents decided to take our family on a "field trip." We went to the Smithsonian exhibition that was held in Portland. While waiting in the two hour line, we were pleasantly surprised. They had on contest that the one millionth person in line won a free computer! The next thing we know there is a channel nine news in our faces. They usher us to a room and give us a brief synopsis of all our winnings. Free carousel ride, 100's of Microsoft programs, and a desktop computer with word 99! Wow!
So what?
Why am I mentioning this? Well, in the late 90's computers still were quite a commodity for most households. I remember going back to my classroom and my teacher wrote on the board, "congratulations on your new computer! That's so exciting." Now, computers have become a necessity. One would not read receive that type of message, or receive envious stares for getting a desktop computer. Now, its a fact of life.
Now What?
The average household has four computers. Such a drastic change to late nineties! Technology has become second nature in our daily living. Whether it be to write a paper, listen to a new song on Itunes, or even post a blog computers and technology have completely changed our culture.

Assignment 7

Kelso High School
I visited the Kelso High School website. I was very impressed with it. Last year, I went on the site to see if I could go observe a classroom. When I had visited the site, it was difficult to manoeuvre around. I couldn't find the contact information necessary to get a hold of a couple of teachers. After being frustrated, I decided to call the school, where I got their email addresses. Now, revisiting the site a year later I barely recognize it. There are tabs that are easy to use, the page was helpful, and the layout was also ascetically pleasing. I didn't really find anything confusing on the site, a few things could have been omitted such as the amount of visitations on the site and the weather forecast. The only area that I found could have been elaborated upon was the use of the Eboard. I found that some teachers utilized it, while others only used it to say where they would be best reached. As a teacher, I would think it would be important that each teacher utilizes that tool to provide a way for parents and students to access their homework and grades.

Reflection 2

What?

Last month I observed a fourth grade math class. It was an interesting experience. The math session started with all the students on separate computers. They used a math program that drilled them with several levels of math, depending on the level of the student. When I walked into the room, the students where completely submerged in the technological world of math. Some students whizzed through the equations, while others' attention wandered. After they finished with the twenty minutes of drilling, the teacher ushered the students into the classroom. Once there, she used several different teaching methods to meet her lesson objective. At one point in the class, one of the students was having trouble making a 4 x4 square on graph paper. He turned to me and said, " I could figure this out if I had a computer." It surprised me that he was most comfortable with technology when I would say I am more the opposite. You want me to do what on the computer?

So What?

Why is this important? Well, as future teachers we need to be aware of what our students know. What they excel at. We need to find ways of implementing technology in our classrooms so students that are digital natives can be accommodated to. On the other end, I don't think a classroom should be completely submerged in technology. Teachers still need to teach, and not rely on pre made lesson plans on the Smart or Activ Board.

Now What?

How can this ideal notion be applied in the classroom? Well, teachers could designate say an hour to Smart Board daily. Whether it be to teach about math, geography or any subject for that matter. They can weave elements of technology when students are required to do projects. Having students use the computer to make a website, write a blog, or write a report will help familiarize with other aspects of technology.

Reflection 1

What?
Last semester I was in a nine o'clock science class. It was a struggle waking up for a class that early. It was even tougher having to stay awake while my professor fumbled with the computer. He was constantly facing obstacles with technology. He tried to embrace technology by implementing it in the classroom, but it proved to be a hindrance during several class sessions. Sometimes it would take him ten minutes (out of fifty) to get the lecture going. After trial and error, he being better at working the system, but by that time he had lost the respect of several of my peers.
So What?
Why am I talking about this? The purpose of this post isn't to complain about a professor. No, I learned a very valuable lesson through that course of time. If you aren't proficient in technology, it's good to use it in small intervals until you are better. Technology should act an enhancement, not a distraction!
Now What?!
After taking that class, I realized the importance of being proficient at technology, smart board, computer, etc. I realized that by not being equipped with the right skills to use them, they actually take away from a positive learning environment. My hope is that I use it correctly in my classroom, to help engage the students, making it a more interactive classroom environment.

What did I learn today?

Today in class we presented individual smart board lessons. Some students presents several slides worth of material while others kept it to one or two slides. It was obvious that some students were more familur with the Smart Board, manquering easily through the screens. While others, (such as myself) fumbled along presenting material that we had discovered.
I discovered several different tricks on the smart board including several options for lessons plans on subjects such as geography, language arts, nutrition, and mathematics. I learned about how to spot light words, how to hide words, and how to make my own podcast and place it on smart board slide. Overall, this class session proved to be valuable, it also taught me that I have much to improve on, including making sure my presentation works before presenting it!

Assignment 2

http://www.box.net/shared/txmyrrtjxn
The activity is called "Writing Concrete Poetry by using Different Themes." The smart board features I am using include:
* The shade, to limit the visibility of the screen

Nets I covered for teachers:
1) Facilitate and inspired students to learn creativity
Teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching, and learning to facilitate experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation in both face-to-face and virtual environments. Teachers;
promote, support, and model creative innovative thinking and inventiveness. Before having the students work on the project, the teacher should already have made a sample poem to model. By modeling, students can start to get excited by the poem they will be creating. This model not only promotes learning it also provides an interesting way of displaying poetry in a unique form. The students have the ability to choose from several different layouts to display the concrete poem. Students are inspired to create metaphoric poems using the smart board, the program, and with teachers guidance. The students gain face-to-face interaction if every student is involved. Teachers can have students design a class poem, then have students create their own poem using a word bank they have created. This program is also a great tool to teach unfamiliar words to students. Another way to utilize the poem is to have students write a short story based on the thematic material used.
Nets for Students:
Creativity and Innovation
Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using technology.
A) Apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas, products, or processes
* By creating a poem, they are using previous knowledge of the words to create a theme that ties the background and words together.
B) Create original works as a way of personal or group expression.
* By using the words to create a poem, essentially the students are creating original works of art
that can be done individually or in a group setting. There is also a setting on the program where students can actually create their own word bank to come up with a completely original poem.
The smart board is a great tool to utilize in the classroom. This program is a great backdrop that can support several different subject matters including poetry, vocabulary, language arts, and communication. The smart board is a great way to get students involved with interactive programs. Students will enjoy using the board to create inventive and thematic poems.

Cool Cat Teacher Blog

I read the blog "Reviving the Dream," by blogger Vicki Davis. I was fasinated with her inspiring blog. She talked about how, as a person, one must not give up goals and dreams for fear of failure. She talked about how we must strive to reach those dreams, not let them fall by the wastside. She used several quotes throughout her blog to show different perpective on the same topic. Her introductory was strong with a quote from the her study in the Bible (particulary Revelations), "Sardis was a city of peace, not the peace won through battle, but the peace of a man whose dreams are dead and whose mind is asleep, the peace of lethargy and evasion," by William Barclay in his Letters to the Seven Churches.

So what? This blog is perfect for any student, parent, teacher, friend who struggles coming to gripes with their current reality. It's a great resource for motivation. She talked about how she wanted to become a successful buisness owner, and went into teaching. As a teacher she feels content, but is constantly striving to improve the technoliogical element of school she works at. Now What? After reading this article, I realized that I can't give up my passions for music. I realized that I can pursue both singing and teaching. I found it helpful that Mrs. Davis wasn't shy about integrating her faith in her blogs and I found that inspiring also.

Assignment 1

I read the article entitled, "Learning with Loggerheads." The article deals with a science project that was done in a classroom. It was on a unit that dealt with the migration patterns of sea turtles. The teacher uses several websites to follow/ track the movement of the turtles. The science project not only integrates technology but it also uses the skills of writing, reading, analyzing information, math to create an enjoyable project that students felt comfortable participating in. They used tracking maps to plot the movement of the turtles. The maps taught the students the importance of plotting the dots sequentially. I felt the article was relevant, however because it was written in 2007 some alterations could be made to provide an even more interactive study of underwater turtles. The teacher could find clips of the turtles, could also plot the movement on a Smart Board. Regardless of some irrelevant information, I felt the Unit taught would be a great addition for a third grade classroom. It introduces students to several important skills that will carry over in the upper grades.

Nets for Students:
The National Educational Technology Standard I will be focusing on is "Research and Information Fluency." Under this category, students learn how to plan strategies to guide inquiry. They also acquire, evaluate, organize, and ethically use information from a variety of sources. Another key aspect is processing data and reporting results. These are all very valuable skills for students of all ages. If this is taught in primary grades, students will be better equipped when asked to do reports and other projects. There are several projects a teacher could use to help students gain the much-needed skills. One project could be a research project. The teacher could have students write a short paragraph on the different types of media available. The teacher could set up several stations allowing students to look at newspaper articles, periodicals, websites, and text books. The second project that would build these skills would be to have the students create a video (depending on the availability of the equipment), and have them present their book report. By having them create a video, technology is incorporated. Having them present the book report on tape allows students the opportunity to show the knowledge they received from the book.
Nets for Teachers:
The Nets that I chose to focus on this semester is "Facilitate and Inspire Students Learning and Creativity." This standard includes, promoting, supporting, and modeling creative thinking. It also engages students to explore real-world issues using digital tools and resources. Currently, I am not in a classroom therefore I do not have "students." However, I hope to help inspire my peers to think outside of the box. There are several ways I hope to accomplish this standard. The first way is to be more familiar with the Smart Board. I recently downloaded it on my computer, and I am going to try to utilize it as much as possible. Secondly, I am going to try to be more involved with world politics by accessing news articles online and watching video clips. Lastly, I hope to promote learning with my siblings by teaching them how to use the Smart Board on my computer.

Generation IM

The article provided several ways for students to communicate via the web in a classroom setting. Before reading this article, I was unaware of the wonderful tools that are available for students. The article mentions how facebook and myspace can sometimes be used in the classroom, but I really don't see the purpose. I could see teacher utilizing YouTube to show an educational clip. I have had several classes that have done that. Out of the three applications, I found that Imbee seems to be the most popular one for students. I was impressed that students used the application to start a book club. I feel that it is important that teachers use devices in the classroom that students can relate to and want to use outside of class.

Smart Board in Education

http://smarterkids.org/research/pdf/JessicaPreisig.pdf
I read an article entitled, "Improving Student Motivation and Performance in Math: Utilizing the Smart Board Interactive Whiteboard as a Tool to Construct an Understanding of Fractions." The article was based on the experience two six grade teacher had with the incorporation the Smart board in her classroom. The article was informative. Two teachers decided to do an experiment to see whether incorporating the Smart Board as a learning device would make a difference in a student's ability to learn fractions, and improve their motivation to want to learn math. The author talked about how learning should be an active experience for students. By using the Smart board, she hoped to actively engage her students in the process of learning fractions. In the article, she states that by using technology in the classroom, it could be considered a "mind tool," that essentially, acts as an intellectual partners with the learner in order to create and critical thinking. After doing a pre and post test on math, the students that used the smart board were more comfortable with fractions, then the classroom that didn't. I felt the article did a great job of showing how the Smart Board is a great asset for the classroom.

I feel that the Smart Board will have a big impact in not only the classroom, but will also affect how a teacher will teach. The Smart Board acts an interactive guide to subjects that might seem foreign for a student. By utilising the system, a student gets a more hands-on approach which will help solidfy the new information. Teachers will also be impacted by the new technology. Teachers will be able to use it for several subjects, and can make lesson plans that center around it. Overall, the Smart Board is a great investment for any classroom.

Beginning of Semester Reflection

Technology plays a crucial role in ones life. It allows one to be plugged into current events. It bridges the gap of distance, allowing us to stay in close contact with people all over the world. Technology is everywhere; in the schools, homes, and the work place. Because technology plays such a crucial role, it is essential that teachers utilize it. As children are exposed to technology, they begin to understand the world around them. For students to be successful in the future, it is important that teachers utilize and implement technology in the classroom.
As a teacher, it important that one is constantly aware of the ever changing world of technology. It will allow students and teachers to have a mutual understanding of the latest technology which creates a more interactive classroom.

Assignment: Turning on the Light

In the article, "Turning on the Lights" the author shows the importance of technology being implemented into a classroom setting. The author talks about how students used to be taught in school more then they do now. One of the main reasons students learn outside of school is because they are more "plugged" into the world with use of cell phones, television, and computers. No longer do students need teachers to relay information, they need to have information they have received from outside sources explained. After the article discusses the change in education with the use of technology, it talks about ways of implementing the technology in the classroom to prevent boredom. Overall, I felt the article was pretty strong. At one point in the article, a statistic was used, stating that 50-70 percent of students suffer from boredom in the classroom. The author linked that statistic to the lack of technology in the classroom. In reality, there could be several factors linked to that conclusion. Boredom is not a new trend. Although there were a few statements in the article I didn't fully agree with, overall I thought the article brought valid points for teachers to consider.
After reading the article, I observed a fifth grade classroom. I watched as students learn how to find the perimeter and area of a square. I noticed one of the students wasn't doing the work like the rest of the students. I asked him why he wasn't. He said, "I just don't get this, if I was on a computer I would be doing a lot better." After he said that, it reminded me of the section in article that articulated how students are wired differently due to the technology they are exposed to.

My decision to be a teacher

When I was in high school, I wasn't sure on what I wanted to do as a career. I thought of becoming a music major, lawyer, or nurse. After taking classes at the local community college, I decided that teaching was the career for me. I reflected back on childhood memories, and I realized my most fond memories included times when I taught my brother and sister how to read. After praying and reflecting, I have become confident in my career decision. Since being accepted into the Education Program at Northwest University, I have decided that fourth or fifth graders would be especially enjoyable to teach. Even though I would enjoy teaching those grades, I am open to teach any grade.
During the course of this class, I hope to learn more about the smart notebook, wiki, and weebly. I hope that I will be more proficient at Html also.
