Generation IM

The article provided several ways for students to communicate via the web in a classroom setting. Before reading this article, I was unaware of the wonderful tools that are available for students. The article mentions how facebook and myspace can sometimes be used in the classroom, but I really don't see the purpose. I could see teacher utilizing YouTube to show an educational clip. I have had several classes that have done that. Out of the three applications, I found that Imbee seems to be the most popular one for students. I was impressed that students used the application to start a book club. I feel that it is important that teachers use devices in the classroom that students can relate to and want to use outside of class.

  1. I'm curious to see what sorts of pros and cons accompany the use of FaceBook and MySpace in the classroom. It seems to me that for the most part, things that Facebook is useful for, can be accomplished easier on other sites/programs - such as blogs or Penzu.com (online journaling site). I can see pros for Facebook class groups being the convenience for students and the easy group sharing of sites, images, "wall posts," and videos. Employing YouTube in the classroom is becoming (in my mind) a better and better idea - first you have to find quality videos that aid the class.

    Good comments on the article.
